Autumn Strong, Written by Jamie C. Martin for all my fellow introverts
who know that it’s our calling to be still and strong in this stormy world
My roots determine my life:
Deeper means stronger.
They inch down,
not visible from the surface.
Essential all the same.
Each time thunder rocks the sky,
I must go deeper or die.
Others with shallow foundations
fall to the ground in a swift breeze.
Not me.
My early days required
depth to survive.
I didn’t plan it;
I didn’t choose it.
But now there’s no toppling me.
My branches take longer to display their fruit.
Not as quick as plums in summer.
Not as showy as cherry blossoms in spring.
Yet as autumn nears,
no one can look away.
People drive for miles to gaze at my sparkle,
photograph my brilliance.
“How can something so still be so dazzling?”
they wonder. They shake their heads,
wander off confused.
Others come, hang back a moment,
wait for the crowd to dwindle.
Inching nearer, they place one hand
on each of my sides. I hear their whisper,
“I get it; I’m like you.”
In quietness and confidence
shall be your strength.
I finally know it’s true.
Still and stunning in a stormy world:
That’s my calling; that’s my Autumn Strong.
