August 1st is a public holiday in Switzerland. It marks the annual celebration of the signing of a charter, back in August 1291, which is regarded as the foundation of the country.
Big family gatherings and barbeques are a common feature of the day. Communities across Switzerland also celebrate with bonfires, fireworks, and parades.
A National Day tradition that has gained in popularity is having breakfast at a farm. This is particularly popular among families with children since it’s not only a culinary delight, but everyone gets to experience what it’s like to keep a farm running.
